When Sickness Follows a Family Line

"Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord." — James 5:14

A Diagnosis Nobody Expects

Consider a situation that has repeated itself in many families.

A committed believer — someone who serves God wholeheartedly — becomes gravely ill. Tests reveal a tumor of the kind that offers almost no survival time and no effective treatment. Surgery is scheduled for the next morning.

She is not a stranger to spiritual things. In fact, she has known for years that a particular disease runs through her family. As far back as anyone can trace, family members have died of it, most of them young, most of them with the same organs involved. She had believed she broke it off her own life years ago. Evidently not.

She does not know where it originated. She has tried to find out and could not.

But she does know one other thing about her family: a long history of sexual immorality and broken marriages, generation after generation. She is the first person in the line to remain in a marriage — and she attributes that to having come to Christ.

The Missing Step

Here is what had never been done. She had commanded the illness to go. She had never confessed the sins of her forefathers.

Since the pattern was inherited, the legal ground was almost certainly inherited too — granted by the conduct of those who came before her, never acknowledged, never renounced.

So the order was corrected:

First, confess before God every sin of the forefathers that she knew of, and ask forgiveness for those she did not.

Second, ask the Lord to separate her completely from all the sins of her forefathers by the blood of Jesus Christ.

Third, ask the Lord to remove the curse if it had come from Him.

Fourth — and only then — address the enemy, commanding the curse of this disease broken in the name of Jesus Christ over her life and the lives of her descendants.

Fifth, anoint the affected part of the body with oil, commanding every spirit associated with the curse to leave in Jesus' name.

Sixth, ask the Lord to heal all the damage that had been done.

She did this the night before surgery. The next day the surgeons could not find the tumor the scan had shown. There was inflammation, and nothing else.

The Question Worth Sitting With

How many believers have prayed faithfully for healing, and been prayed for by others, and never received it — because a legal ground granted generations ago was never dealt with?

This is not a formula, and God is not a machine. Not every illness has this cause, and not every prayer prayed this way ends in a clear scan. God remains sovereign, and some of the godliest people in Scripture were not healed.

But this step is so often skipped that it is worth taking before concluding that God has said no.

Point to Ponder

Some prayers for healing go unanswered not because God refused, but because a claim was never removed.

Verse to Remember

"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." — 1 John 1:9

Question to Consider

Is there an illness in my family that appears in generation after generation?

Today's Practice

Look at your family chart again, specifically at causes of death and chronic illness. Note the ages.

If a pattern appears — the same disease, the same organ, the same decade of life — do not accept it as inevitable heredity without asking God about it first.

Then pray through the full sequence: confess the sins of your forefathers, ask for complete separation by the blood of Jesus, ask the Lord to lift anything He has placed, break the curse of that specific illness by name in the name of Jesus Christ over yourself and your descendants, and ask the Lord to heal what has already been damaged.

Continue seeing your physician. This is not a substitute for medical care; it is a dimension of care that medicine does not address.

Prayer

Father, there is a shadow over my family in this area, and everyone has simply accepted it. I am not going to accept it without asking You first.

I confess the sins of my forefathers — the immorality, the violence, the idolatry, the pride, and everything I do not know about. I acknowledge it all as sin.

Separate me completely from their iniquity by the blood of Jesus Christ. If any of this has been Your hand, I ask You to lift it now that I have turned.

And in the name of Jesus Christ, I take authority over the curse of ______ in my family line, and I command it broken over my life, my children, and my children's children. I command every spirit associated with it to leave now.

Lord, heal what has already been damaged. Restore what has already been lost. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Before you conclude that God said no, make sure you removed the claim.
