Day 1: The Problem That Will Not Go Away

Something Isn't Adding Up
You know how to pray. You have read the promises. You have attended the healing service, sat through the counseling, memorized the verses, and confessed the truth out loud with as much faith as you could gather.
And still it is there.
The same illness that comes back every year. The same crushing pattern in your finances. The same argument in your marriage that never resolves. The same child walking away from God no matter how hard you love them. The same season of spiritual dryness that descends the moment you begin to grow.
Perhaps you have even said the sentence out loud, quietly, ashamed of it: "My life was going along fine until I gave my heart to Jesus. Then everything that could go wrong did."
That sentence has been spoken by more Christians than you would ever guess. It is spoken by pastors. It is spoken by missionaries. It is spoken by faithful people who tithe and serve and read their Bibles and cannot understand why their lives keep coming apart in the same place, over and over, like a bone that will not set.
These twelve days exist for one reason: to help you see a battle you may have been fighting blindfolded.
Not Every Problem Is What It Appears to Be
Let us be careful here at the start. Not every hardship is a curse. Some suffering is simply the cost of living in a fallen world. Some is the natural harvest of foolish choices. Some is genuine persecution, and Jesus promised us plenty of that. Some is the loving discipline of a Father who refuses to leave us as we are.
But some troubles do not behave like any of those.
They are too persistent. Too patterned. Too generational. They repeat down a family line with a precision that no coincidence explains — the same disease, the same divorce, the same poverty, the same addiction, the same suicide, appearing again and again like a signature written across four generations.
Families are plagued by mental illness, alcoholism, incest, and financial ruin that no amount of counseling seems to reach. Churches struggle for decades and never grow — always splitting, always changing pastors, always starting over. Believers accept Christ, flourish briefly, then lose all appetite for prayer and Scripture and quietly drift away.
There are many explanations for such things. But there is one explanation that is almost never considered in Christian teaching today: an unbroken curse.
What a Curse Actually Is
Strip away the movie imagery. A curse, in the plainest terms, is an invocation for harm to come upon someone — a spiritual mechanism sent to injure, to destroy, and sometimes to kill.
The Old Testament is saturated with the subject. Blessing and cursing are laid out before Israel as two roads with two destinations. And the New Testament does not abolish the reality; it announces the remedy: "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us" (Galatians 3:13).
That verse is not decoration. It is a legal declaration. At the cross, Jesus Christ conquered Satan and purchased our freedom — and He handed His servants authority in His name to break curses off human lives.
So the question is not whether Jesus has power over curses. He does, absolutely and finally.
The question is whether you know how to use what He gave you.
Ignorance Is Not Innocence
Here is the hard part of today's lesson, and it is best to face it now rather than on Day 10.
You cannot fight a battle you cannot see. You cannot defeat an enemy you do not know is attacking. That is why Scripture says so bluntly, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge" (Hosea 4:6) — and why Paul insisted, "Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices" (2 Corinthians 2:11).
Most of us assume that what we don't know can't hurt us. That God would never allow consequences to fall on us for something we did in ignorance. It feels unfair otherwise.
But the Word says something sobering:
"If a person sins, and commits any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the LORD, though he does not know it, yet he is guilty and shall bear his iniquity." (Leviticus 5:17)
And the rest of Hosea 4:6 is heavier still: "Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children."
Notice the mechanism. God is not being cruel. He is describing how reality works. A man who does not know that a wire is live is not less electrocuted for his ignorance. And every one of us has access to a Bible we mostly do not read.
To neglect God's Word is not neutral. It is to reject knowledge — and to walk unarmed into a war that is already underway.
But You Are Not Left to Figure This Out Alone
If that were the whole story, today would end in despair. It doesn't.
Before He returned to the Father, Jesus promised the greatest possible help:
"When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come." (John 16:13)
Read that promise as the practical tool it is. You do not need to be a scholar of the occult. You do not need to reconstruct your family history from census records. You do not need to guess.
You need to ask.
Two questions come up constantly from believers wrestling with this subject:
"How can I know about sins in my past that I have forgotten?" — Ask the Holy Spirit to bring them to your remembrance.
"How can I know if a curse is operating in my life?" — Ask the Holy Spirit to show you.
He is faithful to answer. He convicts, He reveals, He guides into all truth. That is His stated job description. And He indwells you.
We serve a merciful God who is "faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). The goal of these twelve days is not to make you afraid of demons. It is to make you dangerous to them.
Start Here
For the next twelve days you are going to examine areas of life most Christians never examine: what your ancestors did, what is hanging on your walls, where you have walked, what you have accepted, what you have said, and what you have never taken back.
Some of it will surprise you. Some of it may sting. Approach it the way you would approach a doctor's examination — not with dread, but with the hope of a diagnosis that finally explains the symptoms.
You are not looking for something to be afraid of. You are looking for a door that has been standing open, so you can finally close it.

You can be completely forgiven and still be under attack through a door you never knew was open.

What is the one problem in my life or family that has never resolved, no matter how much I have prayed about it?
Today's Practice
Take a sheet of paper and write down, honestly, the recurring problems you cannot solve.
Then draw a second column and list the same kinds of problems as they appeared in your parents, your grandparents, your siblings. Illnesses. Addictions. Divorces. Poverty. Anger. Untimely deaths. Mental torment.
Look for patterns. Do not interpret them yet — just record them. You will need this page repeatedly over the next eleven days.
Then pray this, out loud and unhurried: "Holy Spirit, I am asking You to show me the truth about my life and my family line. Reveal anything hidden. I am willing to see it."
Then wait. He may answer today. He may answer on Day 7. He will answer.
Prayer
Father, I come to You in the name of Jesus Christ. I confess that there are things in my life I have not been able to fix, no matter how sincerely I have prayed. I have blamed You at times. I have blamed myself at other times. Today I am asking for something different: I am asking for knowledge.
Holy Spirit, You are the Spirit of truth. Search me. Show me what I do not know about my own life — sins I have forgotten, doors I have opened, inheritances I never chose. I am not asking out of fear or curiosity. I am asking because I want to be free, and because I want to serve You without hindrance.
Give me the courage to look at whatever You reveal, and the faith to act on it. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
