Day 5: Renouncing What Was Spoken Over You
"Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you." — 2 Corinthians 6:17
Everything Fell Apart After I Got Saved
It is one of the most common testimonies in the church, and one of the least understood.
"My life was fine. Then I gave my heart to Christ, and within a year my marriage was in crisis, my health collapsed, I lost my job, and my children turned wild."
The standard answer is: "Well, that's persecution. Expect it." And some of it is. Jesus promised trouble in this world.
But not all of it is persecution. Very often it is a curse of destruction that was triggered the day you changed sides — and it can be broken.
To understand why, you have to understand dedication.
Somebody Dedicated You
Baby dedications happen in every religious tradition on earth — Christian and otherwise. A child is presented, words are said, a covering is invoked.
That is not a harmless ceremony. It is a transaction.
Consider whether any of these describe your family:
- Were you dedicated, blessed, or baptized in a church or temple that does not confess Jesus Christ as Lord?
- Did a parent or grandparent belong to a lodge or secret order — Masons, Shriners, or similar — whose oaths bind not only the member but his offspring and descendants?
- Did any ancestor serve tribal, ancestral, or regional gods, participate in shamanic or spiritist rites, or consecrate children to them?
- Was your family involved in a religion whose ceremonies "endow" children with spiritual power to keep them in that faith for life?
Where such things happened, the words spoken were not empty. Dedications place a claim, and spirits are assigned the task of ensuring the person stays in that service for life. The wording of the ritual may sound benign — blessing, protection, heritage — but the substance is a consecration to something other than the living God.
Parents who served darkness dedicated their children and descendants to it, knowingly or otherwise. The enemy always wants the children.
Why the Roof Falls In at Conversion
Here is the mechanism that explains so many shattered testimonies.
When a person who was dedicated in that way accepts Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, the dedication is broken. Genuinely, permanently broken — you now belong to Christ.
But to the spirits assigned to enforce that dedication, you have just become a traitor.
And the demonic philosophy is simple and merciless: if he cannot be held to the dedication, he must be destroyed. A curse of destruction is activated the moment you defect.
That is why everything went wrong. Not because God abandoned you. Not because your faith was defective. Because you escaped, and the jailers are furious.
This is genuinely good news, though it may not sound like it at first. A curse of destruction is not your new normal. It is not the cost of discipleship. It is a specific attack with a specific origin — and it can be dismantled in an afternoon.
How to Break a Dedication and the Curse Behind It
Follow these steps in order. The order matters, because each one removes ground before the next one strikes.
1. Confess the sins of your forefathers. Ask the Lord's forgiveness and cleansing. Ask Him to separate you completely from the iniquities of your forefathers.
2. Formally renounce every dedication made over your life to the service of Satan, to any demon god, to any lodge, order, or false religion. Say it out loud. Then declare what is now true: "I am a Christian. I belong to Jesus Christ. I serve Him alone."
3. Command every demon placed into your life through that dedication to leave at once, in the name of Jesus Christ.
4. Take authority over the curse of destruction that was activated when the dedication was broken, and command it to be broken immediately, in the name of Jesus Christ.
5. Command every demon associated with that curse of destruction to leave you at once, in the name of Jesus Christ.
Expect resistance at step two. When a group of strong, articulate Christian leaders sat down to do exactly this, they suddenly could not speak. Minds went blank mid-sentence. Tongues twisted so badly they stuttered over simple words. Men who had recited whole paragraphs minutes earlier could not repeat one short renunciation.
They had to bind the interfering spirits in Jesus' name and repeat each sentence — slowly, one at a time — until it came out clean and free. When it did, they knew the interference was gone.
If your mind fogs, if the words tangle, if you suddenly feel this is all absurd — do not stop. You have just been told exactly where the fight is.
Curses Our Ancestors Accepted
There is a second and stranger category: curses that ancestors deliberately accepted on behalf of their descendants.
The clearest example in Scripture is the crowd before Pilate: "And all the people answered and said, 'His blood be on us and on our children'" (Matthew 27:25). Words spoken in a moment of frenzy, reaching forward through generations.
Anyone of Jewish descent who comes to faith in Jesus the Messiah does well to repent for the sins of the forefathers on that day and to ask God to remove that generational curse from himself and his family. It is a prayer of humility and homecoming, not of shame.
And a warning must be attached to it — a warning aimed squarely at the Gentile church. God said to Abraham: "I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you" (Genesis 12:3). Every person who has brought persecution and suffering on the Jewish people has brought a curse from God onto himself. Every person who looked the other way while it happened shares in it.
Ask honestly: has anyone in your family line participated in persecuting Jewish people? Profited from it? Stayed silent while it happened? If so, that is ground to be confessed and cleared today.
The Sin You Keep Repeating
One last inheritance to consider — the one you are actively continuing.
Confessing your fathers' sins accomplishes little if you go on committing them. "I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life" (Deuteronomy 30:19).
Why do alcoholic parents so often produce alcoholic children? It is not only learned behavior. Unless the children acknowledge the sin of the parents and repent of it, they tend to commit the same transgressions and remain under the same curse. The same holds for divorce, for rage, for unbelief, for immorality, for control.
Repentance breaks the pattern. Repetition renews it.
Point to Ponder
You cannot undo the words that were spoken over you as a child — but you can answer them today with words of your own.

Question to Consider
What was I dedicated, initiated, blessed, or committed to before I was old enough to have any say in it?
Today's Practice
Find out what you can. Ask an older relative, if you have one who will talk: What church or temple was I dedicated in? What did Grandpa belong to? Were there any rituals in our family? You may hear things you never knew.
Then, whether your information is complete or not, do this out loud, standing:
"Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, I confess the sins of my forefathers and ask Your forgiveness. Separate me completely from their iniquities by the blood of Jesus.
I now formally renounce every dedication ever made over my life — every dedication to Satan, to any demon god, to any lodge, order, secret society, or false religion, whether I knew of it or not. I renounce every oath sworn over me and every claim made on my life. I declare that I am a Christian, purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ, and I serve Him alone.
In the name of Jesus Christ, I command every demon spirit placed in my life through those dedications to leave me now and never return.
In the name of Jesus Christ, I take authority over every curse of destruction activated against my life when those dedications were broken, and I command it to be broken now. I command every demon associated with that curse to leave me at once and forever.
Lord Jesus, I ask You to seal what You have cleansed and fill every empty place with Your Holy Spirit. Amen."
If the words tangle, stop, bind the interference in Jesus' name, and start the sentence again. Repeat until it flows.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that when I came to You, You received me completely. Whatever was spoken over me as a child, You have spoken something greater: that I am Yours.
I understand now why the ground shook when I crossed over. I am not going back. I renounce every claim that was ever laid on my life by anyone, living or dead, and I place myself entirely under Your Lordship.
Break the pattern in me, Father. Do not let me repeat the sins I have just confessed. Give me a clean line to hand to my children — and if I have children who are already walking in it, reach them and bring them home.
I belong to You. Amen.
